» Age of Conan; May 20th
Mar 29, 2008 - 10:31 AM - by DDH|Matrix
As time draws closer to May 20th we are all anticipating the next MMO. Age of Conan will truly be a game where we will see DDH members both new and old fight along side old allies against old and new enemies. The last “new” game to hit the MMO scene was WoW and EQ2. DDH spent a good amount of time in both games but our insatiable appetite for PVP was not quenched as these games are as “blue” as you can ever want.

AOC is built with the PVP enthusiast in mind. Guilds will be able to dominate key areas of the world, build towns, cities, fortify and upkeep them. In times of battle we can join opposing or defending sides if an ally or opponent is under siege.

A very misunderstood notion is that PVPers do not like PVE. This of course can’t be farther from the truth and in AOC there will be raids on both player and environment content. It is promising to have some of the best end game content imaginable.

At this point in time DDH is not recruiting for AOC as the officers and I still do not know all the details on classes and on what will be needed. In the mean time I am creating a social group that can be joined by anyone who is registered on this site. I would like to invite anyone who understands that DDH goals are to establish a strong influence in whatever PVP server we go to. While this is not an application to join us in Conan this is a venue to one. I am not looking to swell the DDH ranks until we know what is needed in order to establish ourselves, but If you think that you have what it takes then join this social group.

» WAR's Q2 release date "set in mud"
Mar 10, 2008 - 4:14 PM - by Proto
There was a big uproar recently on the Warhammer Alliance forums when one astute forumer noted that gaming mega-retailer Gamestop had updated the release date on Warhammer Online to September 2 of this year. Retailers are sometimes privy to information that gamers are not, so every now and again we'll get an update on a release date from them long before publishers are willing to make a peep. We put the emphasis on sometimes, because there are occasions where the date they set is almost completely arbitrary. Or, as is evidently the case with Warhammer Online, as part of some sort of typographical error.

WAR big-wig Mark Jacobs stepped in to assure gamers that this was a mistake on Gamestop's part. Or, according to Jacobs, "Actually what happened was that GameStop got confused between the various EA release dates for September and put another games release date in for WAR. At least that's what they told us when we called them to ask WTF?"

WTF, indeed. Jacobs went on to reiterate that while no release date is set in stone, they're sticking to their Q2 guns. As an alternative, he suggested that the release date is "set in mud" instead. I'm still betting money that the game will be delayed past the Q2 mark. The reason I don't think the game will (or should, for that matter) ship by that date is due to the little amount of concrete information about the game. Lots of important features such as career progression, final animations, user interface, keeps and siege warfare don't seem very set in stone -- I guess the release date isn't the only thing set in mud.

I mean hell, even the last High Elf class has yet to be announced and lets not forget the game could ship short of some classes. With all of these game features still in the gooey stage of development... a June 30th date just seems too soon for the kind of polished title that we know EA Mythic is going to want/need for launch to even put a dent in WOW subs.

» PC Gamer previews Age of Conan
Mar 09, 2008 - 11:09 AM - by Proto
PC Gamer (part of the CVG network) has just released their preview of Funcom's Age of Conan: Hyborean Adventures. It is packed full of tasty observations, screenshots, and interesting details about this eagerly anticipated MMO. While we knew some parts of it already (the conversational choices with NPCs affecting your standing with them) other parts were interesting to hear about. We're most interested in the work of the 8 dedicated quest-writers, working hard to fulfill the promise of staying true to the books that we've heard so much about. Apparently they've cranked out 800 quests for launch! Someone order these guys a pizza and a frosty adult beverage for writing approximately 100 quests a piece -- and for trying to do it without using the "kill x things" mechanic.

When you couple this with the other great write-ups and the statement at the very end: "The open beta starts any moment now" I can honestly say I'm more than ready to give the game a shot. Anytime you want to hook us up with some of that sweet beta love Funcom, we'll be here.

With AOC creeping closer and closer on our collective calendars, it seems that each month there's more fat to chew with theClan of Conan newsletters. I'm a big fan of the newsletters and its great to see them keep coming forin-development titles such as Age of Conan. Hopefully some of the otherupcoming MMO game developers will take notice -- these things make giddy. Anyhow, we've got a nicely organized list for all your AoC informational needs.

Here are the main highlights for the newest Clan of Conan issue to hit the digital news stand:
  • Brand spanking-new community site hit this month, go ahead and check out all the updated information
  • A pocket travel guide for all the Hyborian "newbians" that will be washing ashore come May 20th
  • A spotlight on the Onyx Chamber, where mummies (!!!) and big nasty lizards roam free
  • Bestiary updates featuring Scaleskins and theVengeful Mummy (!!!x2), which we read immediately -- because mummies are cool
  • Developer Profile all about Helene Johnson; she rides a very sweet cherry red motorcycle when she's not working on a new quest for AoC

On a side note, they released their system requirements:

Recommended:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz (E6600) or better
Vdeo Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950GX2 or better
RAM: 2GB or more
Enhanced for: DirectX 10, 64-bit processors, multi-core

Technical beta this weekend on the 10th of Feb. You'll be glad to know that the game is shaping up nicely from everything I've read. I'll post all info I can find with Screenies after this weekend's PVP tech test. Here is a clip of their login screen for patching.. Lets just say its a far cry from the devs I'm used to!

» January's Patch = Age of Conan Has Hope?
Jan 26, 2008 - 7:08 PM - by Proto
The word is there was apparently a major patch that came out a couple of days ago and according to some it seems it has had a dramatic difference in the state of the game. Here is an excerpt from a tester:

Quote:
I'm very happy with the latest patch. Cheetah 2 engine was a quantum leap forward for me.

* I can now play with detailed shaders. FPS is much improved, and there are lot less FPS spikes. Much nicer textures at close range, NPC's look tend to have more detailed armor / faces. My avatar also looks better. Water is beautiful. Conarch village looks stunning now (the ugly white fog is replaced with a pretty mist), and Conall's Valley runs much smoother. Buildings in particular look far more detailed.

* No LDB errors that I noticed so far! Huge plus! Quests are really polished also!

* Also various bug fixes, and improvements that I found, too many to mention.

Awesome job, Funcom! Can't wait for female character creation.
So, having read that and a lot of other comments, (the majority of which were all positive), I have a lot of hope that this game might ACTUALLY turn out to be good? Just have to wait and see.

Here's a YouTube video of a L12 Ranger that a best tester posted recently:
